We were told the day before school started for the 2022-2023 school year that our classroom libraries needed to be published in order to be used. A bill was passed in TN legislature that all reading materials/libraries needed to publish their titles. Clearly as an educator for more than ten years and having two degrees I am incapable of choosing age-appropriate books for my students without government oversight or parental interference. As my library has hundreds of books and will take time for me to publish, my library has to remain closed for students. This means my elementary classroom in a Title 1 school won’t have access to reading material for the start of the year. It’s sad when people who have never been in a classroom make decisions for educators and subsequently deny students access to learning materials.
