This week, shortly after two National tragedies, my administration decided it was a good idea to have the pre-k to 8 school do a fire drill and an evacuation drill “to ease anxiety.” I immediately thought this was too soon and quite tone-deaf, as teachers and students were already uneasy and nervous about school safety. I was so nervous going to school that morning.
As I’m rushing my very young students to a nearby church for our evacuation drill, the sound of gun shots echoes around the school, from the good ol’ local shooting range located just behind the school. Here we are practicing what to do in a tragedy, while hearing the most triggering sound possible… but hey, old men need their hobbies right?
I handed in my resignation letter about a month ago, and I haven’t regretted it at all, but that moment was the perfect reassurance of me making the right decision.
