‘Tis the season to put kids and their teachers in front of those Lifetouch cameras and make them uncomfortable. What is it about those school and yearbook photos that make an average or even attractive-looking person look so bad? In the age of AI and incredible photo retouching, it’s like they have a program set up to enhance your flaws, blow up your pimples, make you look even more tired, and just lower your self-esteem in general.
I always hoped for an administration cool enough to allow the teachers to do something silly in their photos. After all, it’s just a K-12 school—it’s not Harvard! I was never that lucky. In fact, I distinctly remember a colleague getting called to the principal’s office and being torn to shreds for making a silly face in his yearbook photo.
