One double-edged trait that students have is their complete and utter honesty. Honesty is a great thing to have but you also have to filter that honesty through the understanding that people have feelings and can be hurt by your honest commentary. Kids don’t have that filter. They will often point out things about a teacher’s appearance, innocently perhaps, and it can destroy the teacher’s self-confidence. We’re people too!
When kids draw their teacher, it is even worse! They will often exaggerate a flaw or certain aspect of their teacher’s appearance. For example, a student recently drew a picture of me that I don’t think I was meant to see, and not only did I look miserable, the lines around my mouth were very pronounced. I now slather wrinkle cream in those areas every day, and wonder if I look a lot older and more miserable than I originally thought. Thankfully, another student saw the picture and said, “That doesn’t capture your beauty at all!” which rescued my heart from the trash can.
That’s what teaching is like. One interaction can knock you down and another will pick you right back up. It’s an insane rollercoaster, so hold on tight and be prepared to be torn down a few times.
Below are drawings that students made of their teacher. Some were drawn maliciously, some were done in secret, and others were presented to the teacher as a gift. Choose your favorite drawing (either the funniest or worst- it’s up to you!) and vote by commenting the number in the comments below! The winner will win two items of their choice from TeacherMiseryShop.com.
